Although she can be a somewhat belligerent, passionate individual, she can also be steady when she needs to be. Being quite old, Portugal tends to take on an ‘older sibling’ role with the other nations (namely to keep ties strong between the Europeans and those in the Americas—Portugal has a thing for that.) A part of her heart, however; is also reserved for those in the Latin Union, which consists of a large section of South America, all of Central America, and parts of Europe. Despite her age, Portugal does enjoy the occasional recklessness that she used to frequently engage in when she was younger. Overall, she probably has more acquaintances than really close friends. Being her friend is usually accompanied with undying loyalty.[/style] [STYLE=font-family: braggadocio; font-size: 40px; color: #5dc565; text-transform: lowercase; letter-spacing: -5px; border-bottom: 5px solid #46ab4e; width: 400px; float: left; margin-left: 20px; z-index: 3; position: relative; margin-top: -10px; text-indent: 15px;]competitors[/style] [STYLE=background-color: #1a150f; opacity: .6; filter:alpha(opacity=60%); width: 395px; margin-left: 20px; padding: 5px; font-size: 11px; font-family: arial; text-align: justify; margin-top: 25px; z-index: 1; color: #ffffff;]She might have some enemies, those that she may have spite during her empire days or even for simply being pulled into certain wars because of her association with certain nations, namely Spain. (I will warn—she’s still a bit spiteful towards him for his past attempts at invasion and frequently trying to overpower her.) Otherwise, Ana can be a bit odd where it concerns enemies. I don’t see her having any really strong ones, but once her enmity is earned (Spain), it is an animosity that will last for ages. Except when it involves someone she cares about. If a person she cares about hurts her, in the end she will eventually be more inclined to accept them back into her good graces.[/style] [STYLE=font-family: braggadocio; font-size: 40px; color: #f08c29; text-transform: lowercase; letter-spacing: -5px; border-bottom: 5px solid #df7c1b; width: 400px; float: left; margin-left: 20px; z-index: 3; position: relative; margin-top: -10px; text-indent: 15px;]courtships[/style] [STYLE=background-color: #1a150f; opacity: .6; filter:alpha(opacity=60%); width: 395px; margin-left: 20px; padding: 5px; font-size: 11px; font-family: arial; text-align: justify; margin-top: 25px; z-index: 1; color: #ffffff;]Ana isn’t shy about love, like most European nations. But she refuses to throw herself at just anyone. She does have standards. They’re not incredibly lofty, but she does maintain them quite firmly. They can’t be a complete ass for one. And there does need to be some level of attraction and desire. Otherwise, she really isn’t desperate and will not torture herself with empty liaisons (unless she has actual feelings for them) just for the sake of ‘having something.’ Unless it’s political—that is entirely different. As she’s learned from the likes of France and Spain, European nations can be a nasty bunch when it comes to negotiations and alliances. Portugal is no stranger to that and she doesn’t expect anything less when accepting certain arrangements with them.[/style] [STYLE=font-family: braggadocio; font-size: 40px; color: #6774b3; text-transform: lowercase; letter-spacing: -5px; border-bottom: 5px solid #54609f; width: 400px; float: left; margin-left: 20px; z-index: 3; position: relative; margin-top: -10px; text-indent: 15px;]supplements[/style] [STYLE=background-color: #1a150f; opacity: .6; filter:alpha(opacity=60%); width: 395px; margin-left: 20px; padding: 5px; font-size: 11px; font-family: arial; text-align: justify; margin-top: 25px; z-index: 1; color: #ffffff;]Anything else? Former colonies or even members of the Latin Union or any other such organization that Portugal belongs to… I’m open for all sorts of plots, so anything that’s difficult to define or can’t really fit into any of the other categories would be placed here.[/style]

Alrighty! We talked a little bit about this, but I'll just write some stuff down for the time being, because it can change as we RP this out. Where do I even begin? XD This is just one of those relationships that's a little hard to describe, because they've been dealing with each other for so long... My headcanon for them is sort of this morphed allies-friends-benefits-lovers-complicated kind of relationship. Anyway, I think Arthur definately would have favoured her for a long time (and still does to an extent.)
But, yes. Longest. alliance. ever.
But what's camaraderie without the occasional dysfunction, amirite? Based on some of the historical events that I've read into so far, I get the vague feeling that he may have used her a bit -- such as pulling the strings on his alliance with her during WWII (despite her neutral status) in order for the Allies to establish bases on the Azores. On the other hand, he was diligent in helping her fight Spain quite a bit (except during the Anglo-Spanish War, which Arthur was really not happy about. XD) Arthur loathed the whole "Iberian Union" thing. Period. XD She's his ally, dammit. ...Just a little possessive... Just a little... But yes, allies for sure... along with the dysfunctional-using-her-sometimes bit.
And I know that there's a ton more history than what I wrote about, but that's what I have so far. x)
Add/takeaway? [/ul][/ul][/ul]

America and Portugal -
Given the history between England and Portugal, I would imagine Al would have heard OF Ana before he actually meets her.
I imagine it would come as a bit of a surprise to everyone that Portugal is the first neutral country to recognize America's independence, considering the close ties to England. XD
It would make the most sense for Alfred and Ana to meet face to face for the first time after the Revolution. If we want to go for exact years, Washington opened up diplomatic relations with Portugal in 1791.
Further research, as you suggested when we discussed this a bit earlier, shows that Portugal considers relations with the United States of importance, and that support has been shown for many U.S. efforts, such as the War in Iraq.
Overall? Yes, these two are definitely on good terms, though when it comes to time periods to rp them, the best times would probably be either in the late 1700s or close to modern-ish (like, within the last few decades).

England and PortugalYeees. I agree with everything you wrote. There’s so much we can do. I specifically like your dysfunctional tilt to them. Because you know how much of a sadist I can be with my characters. I’d like to torment her just a little more by making this as messed up as possible. XD She has feelings for him, but I want them to be somewhat unrequited and yet they continue this relationship of being friends/strong allies/casual lovers. I’m just cementing this from what we talked about earlier as well as my personal headcanon for them. Based on what we’ve talked about, I think this will work out well. B) I can start up a thread even though I have so many atm >.<. America and PortugalIt surprised me when I first read it. XD It'll make for some interesting plottage/drama. But yes, I can imagine so much going on during that time period that made Portugal recognize him as quickly as she did.
If we have them meet after the Revolution, I’m sure he’d appreciate her bringing over some more of that Madeira, eh? XD But yes, I’d like to see them sort of formulating those fresh diplomatic ties. In an odd kind of way, it would be an interesting conversation, considering that he'd just cut ties with England and she is still heavily in contact with his 'older brother'. It may or may not bring up some interesting things/comments/what-have-you between them. XD
In more recent years, she seems to have a strong defense (military) relationship with him as well. So many angles to this. X)
I’m liking both ideas. Furthermore, I have to add (which I have already mentioned to you) that she does get sick of hearing a certain ally if hers complain about him. (And vice versa?) XDDD Idiotas persistentes...

You are a sadist. XD But that's okay, because I like those sorts of plots as well. Mmk, I'll allow you to do that, then. No worries. Take your time. >>

Naja && Ana Sofia
In 1500 or 1501, Manuel I sent Corter-Real and they 'rediscovered' Greenland and made it so it was on the map. So, maybe they met then. I would think she will be friendly with Ana. I have to think what else or if you can think of something do tell.
