People seemed to move around her as the “young” girl weaved her way through the crowd, decked in warm clothes. She couldn’t believe she had actually made it. She kept thinking what, with all the problems going on, she was going to keep having to postpone her trip until he would come down and visit her instead. Ah, but that brought up so many problems within itself. She wasn’t sure she could control herself in her home country. But, enough about that because that didn’t matter right now; what mattered was that Teresa Sánchez-Hidalgo actually managed to make it to Canada. The sun was shining at her in the sky, but she couldn’t help but shiver as a gust of wind threw her hair over her shoulders. She shuddered and tightened the scarf around her neck.
She was definitely not lost.
Teresa couldn’t be lost; not now. Her boss had only given her a couple of days off to be able to go and spend it with Mateo; getting lost would definitely take some time away from being able to joke around one another. (Besides, she really really missed his pancakes.) She glanced down at the cell phone in her hand, wondering if she should call him or not. For the life of her, she could not remember his exact address. Sure, she knew the relative location – which, by the way, was the reason she had been wandering around this neighborhood for the better part of an hour and a half. She blinked in appreciation as a man changed moved over to pass by her politely instead of yelling for her to get out of the way. Los Canadienses were always more polite than the Americans, or even her own people. If it came down to it, she could always ask one of them for help…
Or she could swallow her pride and actually manage to ask her boyfriend for some help...
The Mexican woman winced slightly as she reached into the pocket of her gray jacket to pull out her cell phone. She glanced at her surroundings again before hitting her speed dial, smiling slightly once she realized that his name was really among the only names she had bothered to put there. Sure, she had eventually caved in and wrote down Antonio and Alfred’s numbers in her phone, too. (She had to, especially because they annoyed her all the time. She finally got so tired of having to ask who it was every time.) But, Mateo’s had been a priority. She had personally made it her mission to make sure that he got a text from her at least once a day.
Gosh, she never realized just how clingy she could be.
“Ay, Mateo?” Her voice rang as she adjusted the bag dangling on her arm. “I had wanted to surprise you with a visit…pero, I got lost. I’m in some gran park.” And, with more than just a twinge of embarrassment, “Can you come get me?”

She was so embarrassed. She had been over to his house times and times again, and she had gotten lost. She should have brought Jalapeño with her, or even convinced Orgullo to come with her, instead. Her prissy little kitty never seemed to get lost, and she was pretty sure the only friend her cat had managed to make was with Matthew’s pets. Man, Teresa was cold. Her teeth were chattering, despite the fact that her scarf was wrapped around her neck three times. After she had disconnected the phone with Matthew, smiling when he had promised to meet her, she had ducked half her face into the scarf. The only thing that really managed to peek out were her eyes, and that was only in an effort to look for him. She ignored the people that stopped. They didn’t ask her if she was doing okay; at least, not personally. There were the looks in their eyes that silently questioned whether or not she needed them, but she was determined not to look at them. She was determined to save herself even some embarrassment out of this whole thing. The next time she came, she would be sure to have written her address down on her arm.
It was so weird. She had repeated his address to herself at least ten times before she had boarded the plane. She had even repeated it several times while she was on the plane, before she had fallen asleep. As much as she loved being in the air, it often left her very nostalgic. She often thought about the days where she would be paddling in little boats carved from the trees; or the days where her favorite city in all the lands was build atop an island. As much as she loved Mexico City, Teresa couldn’t spend long days there (much like the Yucatan) without feeling as if a large part of her life was lost to her. She didn’t blame Spain anymore; she couldn’t blame Antonio any more than Alfred blamed him and Arthur and the two North American brothers blamed Francis. (Because, she had to admit, Alfred had gotten the worst end of the deal what with having all of his states ruled by Empires that had been bigger.) She often complained about Antonio; but that was more because of the lack of attention that had been placed on both her and the rest of Latin America. (Except, of course, for the colonies that had been lucky enough not to fall under Spain’s rule, and there weren’t much of those.)
It took her a while to see him, but, when she did, her whole face lit up. She pulled the scarf from her face; letting her smile shine through as she all but jumped off the bench she was sitting on and bounded her way towards him, hand already stretching out. Teresa was always aware of how her boyfriend felt, even if she didn’t pay attention to it right away. She knew that he probably wouldn’t pull away if she snatched at his hand first and laced her fingers in-between his; probably. But, that wasn’t what the Mexican wanted. She stopped a couple of steps away from embracing him and held out her hand, looking at him questionably. ”Lo siento, amor.” She apologized sincerely, feeling the blood rush to her face. It wasn’t because she was cold – although, she was, and a part of her wished he would hurry and take her hand already so she could cuddle against him from his cold country! – but more because the earlier feelings of embarrassment threatened to mix with her feelings for him. “I just wanted to surprise you, y’know? Mierda, I don’t know why I got lost.”

Man, didn’t she feel like the scum of the earth. What kind of awful girlfriend forgot their way to their boyfriend’s house? She might not have felt bad if this had been the first time this had happened, but it wasn’t the first time. It happened time and time and time again. She felt guilty about it. She wanted to keep apologizing. She wanted to, somehow, find a way to make it up to him. She would offer to make panqueques, but hers probably weren’t as good as his were. And, it wasn’t as if she could spoil him when she would probably have to head back to her Mexico in the near future. It wasn’t fair, and Teresa would be lying if she tried to claim that she wasn’t jealous of the estado americano that seemed to remember where he lived. The Mexican country could try to claim that she didn’t remember because she lived so far South. She could try to claim that, and Matthew might accept it, but she knew it would be a lie. She couldn’t remember because, even though she tried very often to try to remember, she had ignored her boyfriend’s existence for a very long time. It had taken el americano for her to even realize who he was.
The guilt didn’t lesson any when she saw the look in his eyes. Or the actions that he did in an effort to hide his annoyance. She winced internally. She had written his address down somewhere, too. She had made all these plans; had recited time and time again where she needed to go and that hadn’t even been enough. There was a special place for people like her; seclusion. She’d probably go do that (or run more drills with her Special Forces) when she returned. Teresa tried to smile encouragingly, but she didn’t think it helped her any. She jumped up slightly to place a soft kiss on his cheek, leaning into him for the warmth. Well, she’d probably go back home with a cold, but that was certainly better than bleeding all over the place as she generally tended to do. The only thing keeping her from crumpling to the ground with shame was probably the fact that she had to keep her cheerful exposition. That is…that’s the facial expression she would keep unless America had somehow broken his promise. If Alfred had told Matthew of Teresa’s progress, she’d probably burst into tears.
“I’ll work on it, okay?” Her smile felt a little weak, even to her. She relished the feeling of being in his arms, her smile getting stronger every second. “What were you doing before? I’m sorry if you had any plans.” She let out a soft sigh, giggling when she could see her breath in the air. She didn’t understand how Matthew was so used to this cold. “I guess it really would have been smarter to call you, but…you visited me last time.” Teresa regretted not calling. She was pretty sure it would have worked out better for both of them if she had, but…that was in the past and she made a point to try not to live in the past anymore.
