You never know
It was the middle of the Revolution, and they were not having an exactly easy time of gaining their independence. It was much more difficult than she was hoping it would be. Or maybe she just wished that Arthur would let it happen without too much of a fight. That, apparently wasn’t going to happen though so the states would have to deal with the repercussions of that. She only looked about fifteen, and so she had gotten ‘parental permission’ from Alfred, who didn’t look much older to be honest. Oh well, they had taken it, and she had proceeded to pretend to be a boy to fight for her freedom. Already she’d gotten injured numerous times, and battles had taken place on her land that left marks on her more than the physical injures she had acquired did. Her hair was down to her shoulders, but it was tied back with a ribbon so she could just pass as a boy with long hair rather than cutting it. She’d taped her chest down so that wasn’t obvious, and wore layers under her uniform, and thus nobody other than the other states and Alfred would know she wasn’t a boy. Well, alright her voice was a bit girly, but usually she just didn’t talk much, and most people didn’t really question it anyway. They knew a number of younger teenagers were fighting, so maybe it just hadn’t cracked yet or something.
Anyway, she’d gotten injured again, and was going to see how one of her other states was doing while she was on some down time. With the number of battles in his state, it probably wasn’t the greatest right now. Thus, she figured she’d go see him and maybe try and cheer him up a bit. Or they could just cuddle the pain away maybe. Well, that probably wouldn’t actually work, but it was a thought. Anyway, she was delivering supplies too while she was at it, because really there wasn’t much else she could do at the moment until she healed. The doctor that had looked at the injury didn’t think she would heal, but clearly he wasn’t used to the states and their weird healing. It was also pretty clear that he wasn’t Alfred’s doctor, really she should go to that one, but wasn’t always given the option to. Thus her shoulder was bandaged up and she was on a wagon waiting for the border cross to New York. It wasn’t exactly a short trip, but it was faster than on foot certainly. If only horses could move faster, er well they could actually, but not while pulling a wagon. Really though, she didn’t want to be bouncing about while injured either, and so she was dealing with the slightly slow ride while watching out for any sort of ambush.
Once she reached her destination she jumped down from her perch and walked over to knock. After all, she had to let them know supplies were here somehow. It wasn’t as if she was just going to sit outside and wait for someone to notice because that was just silly. ”Johnny, it’s your neighbor now open up I brought supplies and moral support?” she stated with a slight hint of amusement. After all, how did one really bring moral support unless it was really just a keep going or something similar? She had also told him who she was without really mentioning a name, because let’s be honest she had a girl’s name. Though currently she was going by Peter rather than Penny, but he might not have recognized that as easily. Though, she did suppose that he did have a few neighbors, but the green hair would definitely make it fairly obvious when he opened the door.

Johnny wasn't doing too well at the moment. The war was raging, and while he had seen a good deal of injury and pain during the French and Indian war, it was nothing to this level. He was still young, couldn't look older then fifteen at this point with a head that seemed a little disproportionately big to the rest of his tall, skinny body and too much wild hair on his head that he couldn't seem to manage. The boy actually had to have Al sign for parental permission for him to fight in the war, he had to wonder how strange that must have looked to anyone that really looked through that particular paperwork.
It was insane out there though, Johnny was sure that no one really cared at this point, they needed all the bodies they could get on the front lines. Unfortunately, the front lines were right on his doorstep lately, back in August Britain had stationed over twenty two thousand soldiers on Long Island and things had gotten worse from there, they had gotten pushed all the way back to Brooklyn Heights, Johnny just barely avoiding capture himself, but most of his territory was under British boots, and it was upsetting. If Washington hadn't managed to get everyone across the East River, Johnny shuddered to think. Another twelve thousand boots on lower Manhattan in September and they had taken New York City, Theo was too young to figure out what was going on, but he wouldn't stop crying for days.
They had been pushed so far back Johnny was almost in New Jersey by this point, Theo as a matter of fact was, one of the few times Jersey didn't argue was when he saw the look on Johnny's face, serious that he take the little boy to the farthest end of Jersey that he possibly could. The damn red coats took Ticonderoga in July, sitting too close to his capital for comfort, and there was nothing he could do against it. By this point the boy was looking rather gaunt as opposed to his normal lithe body, face pale and eyes starting to sink in. Everything hurt. He had bandages wrapped around his head, just under the hairline where long gashes didn't seem to want to stop bleeding.
His back was aching, there was a bruise on his chest just to the left of his heart that was so damn tender it hurt when the wind rustled his uniform against it from Ticonderoga. Various cuts and gashes were wrapped up tightly here and there, he looked like he was wearing more bandages then uniform at the moment. Tenacity on the battle field had caused him to make a name for himself though, the reason he was allowed barracks and not just a flimsy tent, and oh how he was set to lay on the cot and attempt to enjoy the quiet when there was a knock, and he groaned at the idea of moving but instinctively his hand went to the rifle propped against the wall just within reach, ready for a fight.
That voice sounded familiar though and he relaxed just a fraction, he knew his "neighbors" when he heard them, another groan as he pushed himself off the cot and tried his best to walk, instead of limp to the door, "Penny?" The blonde opened the door quickly and looked her over with a particularly critical eye, he had heard word that Pennsylvania was fairing only a fraction better then he was at this point, at least, but her own battle scars were clear at this point, "Come on in, did ya bring anythin' good?" It was a slightly dry attempt at a joke, but he did make an effort none the less. Johnny opened the door wider, stepping to the side to let her in and looking around after her before shutting the door and essentially hobbling back to his cot, "'Ow are ya Penny? I 'eard things ain't goin' too well, Congress had to go runnin' outta Philly and all 'at,"

It would seem that neither her, nor Johnny, were doing all that well at the moment. She had a hole shot basically through her shoulder and it was bright purple from her collar bone, to her ribs, to her upper arm. Heck, her entire right arm hurt to move in the slightest. This, is exactly why she had been sent for supply runs rather than being on the front lines. After all, she couldn’t even hold a gun up right let alone shoot one at the moment. There was a gash on her leg that had healed enough for her to walk, and she really was covered in bruises from various battles where people either hit her with the gun or knocked her off her feet. She’d rather take a fall in a roll and get a few bruises rather than get shot repeatedly. Seeing as obviously that hurt far more than just landing awkwardly. Sure she could break a few bones doing that, but still better than getting shot. Besides, she was fairly certain that her shoulder blade was shattered in some places, and there was probably some damage elsewhere being that she couldn’t feel properly. She wasn’t about to complain about that though seeing as it did cut down on the pain a bit.
She just wanted it to be over, she hadn’t slept well for weeks, and it was starting to show. The pain did not help that in the slightest. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the battlefield. The girl did wonder if that would ever go away, or if she’d be stuck with that sort of nightmare forever. Eventually she’d probably stop seeing them as often at least. Once the war was over she’d sleep better certainly, though that still might take a few weeks. At least she wouldn’t have to wake up and go to battle again after those nightmares though. She knew there would be fights in the future, because nobody escaped that forever, but she was kind of figuring it wouldn’t be right after the Revolution, and hey she might not end up involved. It might be on other soil, and so she’d feel less impact, but she wasn’t about to get her hopes up on that. Anyway, she had traveled her way to New York, and definitely wanted to see Johnny. Actually, that was the main reason she’d wanted to bring the supplies. She knew he wasn’t doing well, or at least had heard about all the nonsense going on in New York, and thus had decided to check up on him. That was what neighbors did after all. Thus she had gone up to maybe give him a little moral support.
She was there now, and he opened the door. Penny smiled at him and gave a slight laugh with a bit of a wince. ”Unfortunately it’s the same old boring supplies.” she said and walked into his bunker while he shut the door behind her. She took a seat on his cot and patted the spot next to her for him to take a seat next to her. He asked how she was and she sighed slightly. ”Not great to be honest. My right arm is currently mostly useless, I’m covered in bruises, and I haven’t been able to sleep in weeks. Because of being run out of the city, I sent Philly with congress, figured if anyone was going to a safe place where they were well protected it would be them.” she said with a sigh. The girl placed a hand on her leg where bandages were hiding under pants from that particular incident. ”How are you? I know it has been a little crazy up here.” she asked him with a small smile. ”I’d give you a hug, but I feel like it would be more painful than comforting for both of us at the moment.” she said with a slight sigh. Penny liked hugs, but not when they were particularly painful certainly. Johnny looked like he had been in a lot of fights, and was covered in bandages, and so she wasn’t about to hurt him either with a hug. Instead she leaned over and placed a light kiss on his cheek.

"Well den dat's just gonna 'ave to be enough," It already was though, any type of supplies being brought over was definitely more then enough at this point and he was happy with any little thing that was brought to help the effort in the state. Hell she could have just shown up by herself with a loaf of bread and he would have been immensely happy to see her. Johnny had gotten so used to having little Theo with him wherever he went, clinging to him all the time that he wasn't very used to being alone the way he was now. Sure there was an entire militia camped out around him, but it really wasn't the same, and he missed having the company of someone like him at that. Sitting down took more effort then he wanted to admit, everything hurt. Everything really hurt. Johnny tried not to wince at the action but it didn't work out to well, not that it mattered as pain and discomfort was probably written all over his face at the moment, "Yeah, ya look like you've seen better days Penny, I ain't gonna lie about dat one," He didn't mean to say she looked bad, still as pretty as he remembered, she just looked like she needed to be patched up though, not that he could say much, the blonde was sure he looked downright frightful with the ugly purple bruising and the multitude of scratches and wounds just about everywhere. He was three inches of skin short of being covered up like a mummy with all the bandages wrapped on his gangly limbs. "Dat's a good call if I ever 'eard one, hope Philly is alright at least," Johnny said with a tired sigh, leaning his back against the wall with a hiss, shutting his eyes momentarily, "It's been a nightmare, dere's more British troops in New York right now den dere are regular citizens," The sad part was, he wasn't exaggerating by all that much, or at least it felt like he wasn't at this point, a lot of people had fled and Britian just kept sending more and more soldiers, "Its like a fuckin' sea of never ending red in Staten Island right now," He spat the sentence out, hatred dripping from every syllable, Johnny really couldn't describe how badly he wanted the red coats gone. A moment later though he seemed to all but deflate, basically wilting where he sat, "I had to send Theo off wit Jersey, I couldn't get anywhere else fast enough wit 'im cause before I could blink dey had taken New York City," He was more then sure that by this point everyone knew how attached he was to the toddler, the kid had become the apple of Johnny's eye the moment he laid eyes on him, and the blonde brought the kid everywhere, showing him off to everyone in the process, "I miss 'im Penny, but he's too young to figure out whats 'appening and its best he stay somewhere safe," He missed the little boy something fierce though, very much like a parent would their child. Another heavy sigh and Johnny shook his head, trying to push the sudden oppressive melancholy away and focus on his visitor instead, "Naw it's alright Penny, ya only got one good arm after all and it 'urts to move either way," Actually it was hurting to exist at that moment if he was going to be completely honest with himself, the thought went out the barrack window though when she kissed him on the cheek, earning her a scarlet blush from the lanky state, who sudden found himself stuttering a little and scratching at the back of his head sheepishly, "R-really now Penny, ya don't gotta go and do dat," He faked a huff, trying to act like a tough guy, but gingerly lifted an arm and laid it around her shoulders as delicately as he could without hurting her, pulling her a little closer to him with a sigh, "I........I don't know 'ow much more of dis I can take Penny," He was frowning deeply, staring at nothing in particular, "I hope to God we actually win dis," It was a murmur more then anything else. Hearing his comment about it having to be enough she gave a slight smile. Really anything probably would help most of the states right now because they weren’t exactly doing fabulously in this war. Then again, really did they expect to against a nation who was much older and experienced? Well, maybe they expected to be able to just get off without too much of a fight or something, or maybe they were hoping for a miracle. Right now, she was kind of hoping for a few miracles. ”It’s certainly better than nothing at least.” she said with a smile at her fellow state. The female state did prefer having company, but as of late she’d been mostly on her own because of her injuries. This was why she volunteered to go see another state the first chance she got. She missed having someone she could really talk to around, and while she didn’t mind pretending to be a boy, it did get tiresome to have to hide all the time. The girl didn’t exactly have the easiest time hiding either; she did have a bit of a figure at her supposed age of fifteen. She could hide it, but it was a bit more difficult for her than the boy states that didn’t have to hide, or the female ones that didn’t quite have a figure yet.
Penny was well aware she looked pretty beat up, but she wasn’t the only one. Johnny actually looked worse than her with all the bandages, and so she gave a sigh in response to his statement. ”We’re both a mess really.” she said with a vague frown. It was true enough; they both looked like they had tried to punch out a firing squad or something equally as ridiculous. Actually, humans probably would have died with their injuries, and it was a good thing they weren’t exactly human. She heard him say it was a good call to send Philly with congress, and hoped that the city was alright. ”If not, I’m kicking the ass of every member of congress for being fine while Philly is not.” she said simply with a frown. Yes, she would punch out congress and nobody would be able to stop her. Well, maybe Alfred pinning her would stop her, but otherwise she definitely would punch out congress for letting her little Philly get hurt. She heard him hiss and looked over before giving a light pat to his knee as a comforting gesture. As he spoke about there being more British troops in New York than citizens she frowned slightly. Maybe they needed to send more soldiers up here to help. She would definitely help if she could, but right now that was definitely not an option, when her shoulder healed maybe. He definitely seemed mad at it, and she could not blame him in the slightest. If there were that many troops in her state then she would feel the same way. Really there wasn’t even much she could say about it. ”You’ll get the island back, I just know it.” she said with a sigh and a small smile.
Then the state said that he had to send Theo with Jersey because he couldn’t get anywhere else fast enough. ”I would have sent him with Philly if you could of made it, but Jersey will hopefully be able to hide him until the end of the war, or if not send him somewhere with less troops, though then it might take longer to get him back.” she said with a slight frown. She knew how attached Johnny was to the city, and knew he had to be upset without him. When he said that he missed the city she sighed slightly. ”I’m sure you’ll see him again soon.” she stated as a form of comfort. Really, she hoped this war would be over soon and they could all go back to having a bit of fun and relaxing. Though she could probably figure something that wouldn’t cause either of them more pain than they already felt. She heard him say that it was alright that she couldn’t give him a hug, and it hurt to move anyway. Yes, actually it did quite hurt to move too much, and he apparently felt the same. Then she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek, which got the reaction of a blush on his face and stuttering. She giggled a bit at his reaction, it looked like he was trying to blow it off a bit, but the blush made it pretty obvious. He laid an arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer while she winced as he touched her bad shoulder. Reaching over she moved his hand from her shoulder to her waist and leaned against him slightly. ”Avoid that shoulder please.” she said simply. He said that he wasn’t sure how much more he could take of this and she nodded with her own frown. ”We will win, we have to.” she commented when he murmured that he hoped they would win. She looked up at him and smiled lightly before reaching up and patting his hair lightly. ”We’ll win, and then we can relax for a while and things can go back to how they were maybe.” she stated with a slight smile.

"I can't think of a single one of us dat ain't by dis point," Johnny said, rubbing the back of his neck as he spoke and wincing slightly at the motion, there wasn't anything that didn't hurt at the moment. It was just all pain, all a big ball of aches and pains that didn't want to stop, sometimes Johnny really thought he was going to start losing pieces, like maybe an arm would finally wither and fall off after all the constant pain. He was kind of hoping it would too, maybe then it would finally stop hurting, but with his luck he'd feel those phantom pains he had heard old soldiers talk about, "I dunno how Al is holdin' himself together at dis point," Attempting to at least relax the slighest bit, his body really didn't wamt to cooperate but either way Johnny tried yo focus on Penny instead, "I'm sure Philly's just fine, tough dat one, and I really think punchin' out Congress would be deeply, deeply frowned upon," He knew where shewas coming from though, and if something bad happened to his little Theo then all bets were going to be off, everyone that happened to be in his path of destruction was getting ripped to shreds end of story. Then again Johnny had a terrible temper that was already partially famous for how explosive it was with the other colonies, dude just had anger problems some times, add in overprotective feelings and there wasn't going to be anyone stopping him. A slight, tired smile found home on his features, more sad then anything else really, "I'm gonna have to, don't got much other choice," One way or another he needed to get Manhattan back, be it on his own or after they won the war, because they needed to win, with all they were doing, with everything they were going through, loosing was just not an option at this point. For the sake of his own moral he needed to keep thinking that they would win or he was going to just lay down somewhere and let the British walk all over him, because he was already so hurt and already so damn tired. "Jayden knows I'll rip him inside out wit my bare hands if somethin' happens to dat kid," There was a growl to his words, Johnny had proven time and time again to be very protective of those close to him, and there really wasn't anyone closer then his little Theo, "I don't care 'ow far he has to take him, just as long as dat kid is safe, I.......I don't even wanna think what would 'appen if da Brits got dere hands on him," He blocked the thought out quickly, frowning none the less though, "Oh sorry Penny," Johnny mentally kicked himself, he should have known better after all, instead he shifted a little more so they could both sit comfortably, pulling her a bit closer and ignoring the way his muscles screamed in discomfort for having moved at all. He just needed to have someone close by, and he hadn't realized it until Penny was there with him, "Nah, we gotta win, and den make everythin' better," Johnny nodded as he spoke, "No reason to go back at all after all dis, just move forward now, right?" New York was always about moving forward, he kept looking forward, kept looking higher up, "Gotta win and change da world, cause its gonna be little ol' us beating dat massive pain in da ass England.....just gotta make it through first," [style=padding: 0px 10px; font-size: smaller;] Date: put it just before the battle of saratoga o.O Location: barracks! Hearing Johnny’s statement she sighed slightly. ”When this is all over I think we should all just go take a nap for a week or something to recover. This is ridiculous.” she stated with another frown. They also would need quite a few painkillers for that to be possible because honestly everything hurt. She idly wondered if Alfred would be okay with them all getting drunk and passing out once the war was over just so they could get decent rest and heal a bit. Though that could be a horrific idea as well depending on how certain states acted while drunk. Ah well, if they all got to sleep then it might be worth the nonsense. Hearing the statement about Al she pondered that for a moment. ”I’m honestly not really so sure that he is holding himself together. Not completely anyway. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was having a harder time than we are with even getting out of bed whether he’s adamant about the cause or not.” she said with another sigh. She certainly wouldn’t be holding herself together, sure she’d try but with all the nonsense going on it wasn’t something that was entirely feasible for nearly anyone. Sure, she loved Al and trusted him to pull through, but she was also incredibly worried about what this must be doing to him.
Hearing that punching out Congress would be deeply frowned upon she giggled and winced at the pressure that put on bruises. ”Frowned upon or not, I doubt anyone would actually try to stop me.” she pointed out with a slight grin. Yes, it was probably a horrible idea, but she also doubted anyone would be willing to stand in her way. If anyone tried they’d probably gain a black eye or two even actually. Penny didn’t even have a temper; she was just a little protective over her cities. When Johnny said he would have to get the island back she returned the tired smile. ”It’s definitely worth the fight.” she stated encouragingly. Either way, the war really did need to finish up soon because the states were looking pretty worn down by this point. After all, they only looked like teenagers, and never had to fight quite at this scale before. Sure, a few spats here and there with Indians, but nothing like this. It was, admittedly, exhausting and she found herself rather homesick at the moment. She really just missed her bed, and certainly missed being able to move without all of the pain.
Hearing the statement about Jay getting possibly ripped inside out she almost felt bad for him. ”Jay can be responsible when he has to be, I’m sure the kid will be fine.” she noted, and hoped for Jayden’s sake that she was right. Otherwise after the war and the pains of battle, Jayden would be in a whole new world of pain from Johnny’s wrath. Ah well, she wasn’t going to worry about it right at the moment. He mentioned not wanting to think about what would happen if the British got their hands on him. ”I don’t think Arthur’s cruel enough to hurt him, but still.” she said with a light frown. That would only serve to get him repeatedly punched in the face, and she was pretty sure he wasn’t a heartless monster. He’d been so nice to them when they were little after all. The hand on her shoulder was quickly moved and just a slight wince followed it. ”It’s okay. Everything hurts, so it’s hard to tell where you can and can’t touch honestly.” she said and was pulled a bit closer. The female state leaned against him a bit and yawned slightly.
”This war would be entirely pointless if we went back after it. Everything will hopefully be better. Maybe England will just give up and let us go.” she said with a slight frown again. The closeness of another state felt nice, she was mostly stuck with other troops, so having someone else that she could talk to was quite nice. He was someone that she didn’t have to hide certain things from, like her real name or her gender. Often times when she slipped up she played it off as that was her twin sister, but mostly the girl ended up having to keep to herself because of it.
