REMI (NEW ORLEANS) DUBOIS
{ “But during all these years I had a vague but persistent desire to return to New Orleans. I never forgot New Orleans. And when we were in tropical places and places of those flowers and trees that grow in Louisiana, I would think of it acutely and I would feel for my home the only glimmer of desire I felt for anything outside my endless pursuit.” –Anne Rice, Interview with a Vampire }

I Feel Like We're Summoning The Devil
Nickname/Alias: Re, Rems, N'awlins, ‘Da Big Easy’
Gender: Male
Character Type: City
Country or Country of Origin: US
Canon or Original: Original
[/size][/ul]
When I look into all of your stupid faces
I think how fun it will be to pound them into dust
Hair: Orange-Red
Height and Weight: 5’11”; 160lbs.
Other Distinguishing Features: Remi’s most distinguishing feature is noticeable the moment he opens his mouth. The N’awlins accent is unique and no one really knows how they acquired it—most likely just from an odd, wide mixture of immigrants mixed with Southern Créole/Cajun roots. It’s not entirely Cajun and yet it’s not stereotypical Southern dialect either (thanks Hollywood for screwing that up…) It’s an odd mixture of harsh New York "Brooklynese" with thick Créole undertones.
(i.e. Bourre (BOO ray), ‘Who dat? Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?’ – Saints chant)
Overall Appearance:
The first time anyone meets Remi, they’re eyes are probably drawn first to his bright, crazy hair. It seems to be in a perpetual state of messiness and would take quite a bit to force it into any style. His eyes are a similar odd shade of red, though it’s slightly more subdued than his hair. At least it’s easy to spot him in a crowd, even from far off. He’s of average height, just barely less than six feet, and has a fairly lean build. Perhaps a little more on the slighter side rather than built, but still solid. He’s pretty good at staying active, so he’s fairly well off when it comes to staying in shape. Remi’s usually seen in moderately casual, sometimes dressy attire. Once in a while, he’ll gravitate towards some of the flashier, colorful, and slightly outrageous items. He’s certainly not shy about trying new fashions or making statements through his appearance. The man has a tendency to be quite flashy and wild during that lovely Mardi Gras time of the year… though having Bourbon whiskey running through his veins at that time of year certainly doesn’t help.

Man up or I'll beat you with my peace prize!
- Mardi Gras (!!)
- Bourbon whiskey
- Parties (the wilder the better)
- FOOD (jambalaya, gumbo, turtle soup, alligator, crawfish, Po boy, Muffulettas, fried oysters, étouffée, Praline, ‘red beans n rice’, frog legs, beignets, café au lait… typical Orleans fare)
- The Saints
- Jazz!
- Although… enjoys all genres of music (brass bands, Oreleans hip hop, cowpunk (ayup..), sludge metal, southern rock, and doom metal… they have a bit of everything.)
- Nightlife on Bourbon…
- Meeting new people
- Collecting odds and ends
- Brightly colored beads (slightly ADD…)
- Flashy things
- Voodoo Fest
- Spending money (impulse-buys)
- Can be a bit of a sleaze… (though more in a friendly, wild, ‘free love’ kinda way)
- Dem haints… (Not necessarily a ‘like’, but he doesn’t mind ghosts as much as others… he’s kinda stuck with them, as he’s the country’s most haunted city... Might as well get used to them. =’D)
Dislikes:
- Stuck-ups
- Stiffs
- Cops
- Salads
- ’Health’ foods in general
- Being forced to wait for anything
- Hurricanes…
- Martial law in general
- Hollywood’s depiction of the way he talks
- Bland food
- Boring, uneventful things in general…
- When the haints start messing with his things (D<)
- Being reminded of the loss that he endured during Hurricane Katrina… it goes against the grain for him.
- Closed-mindedness
- Running out of Bourbon whiskey…
- Event cancellations
- Snow
Strengths:
- Friendly… which sort of leads into the whole ‘open arms… let’s just party’ approach that he has going on. (10 million visitors a year)
- He’s actually quite resilient whenever the going gets rough
- Extremely open-minded
- Manages to hold onto his smile despite tragedy
Weaknesses:
- Never looks towards the future. Always in the here and now.
- Poor impulse control. If it looks good, he’s gonna do it.
- Pretty things (people included)
- Alcohol… would probably qualify as an alcoholic
- … brightly colored, shiny items…
Fears:
- Drowning
- The feeling of imprisonment (Martial law being placed over him again)
- Hurricanes
- Losing such a substantial amount of life again
Secrets:
- … He privately delves into Voodoo practices every once in a while… It comes more out of his need to satiate certain superstitions that tend to creep up on him. (i.e. pacify the spirits, reading dreams, warding nasty things, etc.)
- He’s a secret-keeper. Though it’s questionable how much of this is actually a secret. Remi adopts a Las Vegas-like philosophy regarding what happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans. Really, he’s a party-loving, drinking, sinful, playful, ill-behaved city. Most of the time, in any case… And despite everything he’s gone though, he’s not going to be changing that anytime soon. When others visit him, then he’s going to give them what they expect with little in return. And he won’t tell a soul.
Any Quirks/Habits:
- Splashes Bourbon into anything he drinks
- Encourages drinking regardless to who he’s talking to. For all occasions. For any hour of the day.
- Physically affectionate to the point where he might make stringent people who have very defined boundaries uncomfortable.
Overall Personality:
New Orleans isn’t difficult to understand, but he is difficult to describe. Countless authors and artists have tried and failed to capture the allure of the old city, deeply rooted and shrouded with an odd, compelling kind of aura that will draw you for more again and again. It’s an addiction. Orleans continues to draw crowds for its dark, yet playful atmosphere—whether it’s for wild weekend parties, drinking all through the nights, eating the colorful, eccentric foods, indulging in the music scene, or even seeking out an encounter with something otherworldly. Orleans has a bit of something for everyone and like any good addiction; it’s hard to not come back for more. Remi, of course, encompasses the spirit of Orleans. The man knows how to use that allure to his advantage and can be quite secretive when he needs to be and has very little shame for being who he is and for the things that he indulges in. Remi’s not entirely difficult to understand, as he likes to give people a good time along with very little reason to regret doing what feels good to them.
Given his nature, he’s perhaps far too impulsive for his own good… and quite lascivious. He enjoys playing with the senses: whether it’s through food, sight, the sounds, or even through the pleasure of touch. And he hopes that all visitors are just as enamored as he is with letting go and just enjoying the thrill of the moment, for however long their stay is with him. With that being said, Remi likes to sometimes joke that his bachelor pad has more visitors than Disneyworld… While not true, his home is a bit of a revolving door, if you will…
Remi is also infamously good at keeping secrets. If someone wants to visit him for certain reasons, then he’s not going to go leaking the details to every other individual that he passes on the street (or, more importantly, to others like them.) That’s messy politics, and Remi would rather not complicate things by throwing in not-so-innocent details. Remi isn’t usually one for involving himself too much in things that don’t concern him. He’ll keep to himself for the most part. Along with his ups, however, he has definitely had his share of tragedies and he’s proven through them that New Orleans is resilient and strong. His population is currently exceeding what it was before Hurricane Katrina and he’s still considered to be at the forefront of cities to visit
