“The strength of a woman can carry the weight of the world.” – Sarah Pezdek-Smith
Nickname/Alias: Soapy, Sofie, My Sweet, Sister, Crybaby.
Gender: Female
Character Type: Country
Country or Country of Origin: Ukraine
Canon or Original: Canon
[/ul]
Hair: Blonde
Height and Weight: 6'1 ft., 176 lbs.
Other Distinguishing Features: A large bosom and an even bigger heart.
Overall Appearance:
Sofia is a woman of soft curves and muscle. Having been born into the breadbasket of Europe, Sofia had been put to work in the fields ever since she was a girl. This caused her hands to become rough and collased – and muscle is well, a given, although she's not without the slightest bit of fat nowadays due to the abundance of food, even if her country isn't a prosperious superpower. Sofia's features are what one immediately thinks of when they hear 'Ukraine' – a round face with sharp cheek bones and stunning blue eyes. And framming her face is soft blonde curls in a bob, usually occopanied by a hairband or clip of some sort. Her clothing outside of work is fashionable, but conservative and carefully kept and luandried – it could be five years old and yet not show a sign of it's real age, although Sofia's work clothing is not so fortunate. They're often victems of rough wear and tear – patches and rips are often quickly repaired, however. [/ul]

Overall Personality:
Sofia is a woman who has a big heart and a stubborn disposition. Even if it's a poorly made decision, she'll often stick by it to the end, and she trusts people with all her heart, even though years of experience has told her to do otherwise. She's hardworking and dedicated – there's nothing that could stop Sofia from her goal once she's made up her mind. However, there are times when she chickens out due to her soft hearted-nature. Often times, if Sofia sees an innocent suffering due to her trying to get her own way, she'll lessen up or indeed try to /help/.
Often times, she'll be reduced to tears – Sofia just can't seem to fight them. Panic and stress seem to be connected directly to her tear ducts – and indeed, she has built up anxity issues over the years due to constant invasion and occupation. Chew toy of europe? Indeed. However, it's the calm before the storm that one should look out for. When Sofia is truly enraged or upset (which doesn't happen often) there probably won't be any warning signs save for extremely subtle ones, and by then, one can expect to be a spot on the floor, literally or figuratively.
That's simply the way she is – and although her charitable nature is something to be admired, it's gotten Sofia misused before. However, there is some steel under that silky exterior – Sofia can be very cutthroat, especially when she's simply had /enough/ of everyone else's game or indeed her own people's. She has no problem with backstabbing, manipulating, and outright attacking. Sofia has a love of freedom and of home – adventure, surprisingly, is something she enjoys. The rush and the joy she feels when out and about is lovely, although she puts family before her own indulgences. Whether on the battlefield or at home cooking a loaf of bread, she's happy.[/ul]
- 'Ukraine' is born in the nineth century as a collective people and reigion known as the 'Rus' or 'Kievan Rus'. In 988 Ukraine accepted Christatainity and devolped close ties to Europe.
- Info-structure weakend over the years and eventually shattered Kievan Rus as a major power with the Mongolian invasion of the 13th century.
- Halych-Volhynia in the west of Ukraine became the new center for political power in the region and remaind thus until Ukraine fell under Polish-Lithuanian rule in the 14th century.
- The Cossacks broke from the Poles and created their own state in the 16th century, and, through a series of wars, managed to glean most of Ukraine from Polish rule. A temproary treaty forming the Polish-Ukrainian common wealth was formed in 1649, but in the 1650s war soon broke out again.
- In need of assistance from Russia, Ukraine signed the Treaty of Pereyaslav with the nation, the result ended up with ukraine being partioned off between the two nations.
- The Cossacks struggled with Russia for independence, and in the 18th century joined forced with Sweden in a war with Russia, which ended badly. By the late 18th century, most of Ukraine was obsorbed into the Russian Empire, save for the western half, which went to the Austrian Empire.
- In the 19th century, a huge cultural rivival took place and the idea of independent statehood became all the more tempting and real. Artists, poets, and a number more of famous intellectuals were brought out in this period.
- With the Russian Revolution in 1917 and the collasp of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ukraine saw it's chance to become a soverign state, and in April of 1917 the National Ukrainian Assembly met in Kiev and in November of that same year it declared itself the Ukrainian People's Republic. However, when te Bolsheviks created a rival Communist government, in January of the next year, Ukraine declared itself an independent state.
- However, with the Austrian-Hungarian empire gone, the Western Ukrainians also delcared themselves independent with the short lived Republic of Western Ukraine, which was short lived and eventually occupied by the Poles. With foreign forces pressuring Ukraine to give up, Soviet forces won out in the early 1020s and created what is now known as the Ukrainian USSR.
- The USSR underwent purges and russification programs – the most notable point of brutality being in 1933, with Stalin creating a famine that killed seven, to /ten/ million Ukrainian men, women, and children.
- In the western ukraine, however, Ukrainian citizens were denied automony and administrative positions promised by Poland in post-WW1 pacts and settlements.
- Under the Non-Agression Pact and resulting invasion of Poland by Russia and Nazi Germany, western Ukraine was now under Soviet occupation. However, with Germany's invasion of the USSR in 1941, Ukraine made one more bid for independence.
- The Nazis quickly took over the country and turned it into a German colony, deporting a huge number of the native Ukrainians to use as cheap slave labor.
- However, as the war drew to a close, Ukraine was once again under Soviet control and it would stay like that until the 1990s. During this time, many Ukrainians rebelled against Soviet rule and Ukraine was home to the USSR's strongest human rights group,The Ukrainian Helsinki Monitoring Group. Ukraine would experience economic hardship and altogether suffer due to the corruption in the Soviet government.
- This hardship continues on today in the now democratically elected Ukraine (having announced it's independence sucessfully in 1991) due to the harsh hit Ukraine took when transfering into capitalistism. However, the nation grows and thrives and slowly but surely it is recovering, even if the road is long and rather bumpy. [/ul]
“Soapy! Soapy! Tell me a story!” The little girl screehed, flailing about in her nightgown, fat little fists gripping at Sofia's skirts for all they were worth.
Sofia sighed, but smile – the sweet little tote hadn't been able to say her name correctly since she began to loose her front teeth. Well, there were some perks, being a governess – one, it filled the void of children that Sofia was sure by now she'd never have, and two, well, this little angel was just so /cute/. With a sweeping of skirts and a tight grip on the little girl, Sofia hoisted her into the air and and caught her with strong hands, twirling her around in her arms before settling back onto the girl's, Cathrine's, bed.
“Now now,” Sofia scolded lightly, tucking her back in. “I can't always tell you stories before bed – your mama will think i'm spoiling you rotton!”
“But I /am/ spoiled rotton, Soapy~!” Cathrine chirpped, wriggling around in her sheets as if they were covered with lice and other creepy crawlies. Which, knowing her family's cheap ways, was very much possible. Which a swift kiss to the cheek and the pulling back of thick curls with deft fingers, Sofia chuckled and thought for a moment.
“I know – I heard this one from a friend of mine just the other day – it's about two little children who went into the woods by themselves one day. It's kindof scary though – are you sure you wanna hear?” Sofia asked, leaning into the girl's face for dramatic effect – shush, shush, of course she was going to soften it up a little! She wasn't about to scare the poor dear!
“Yes, yes i'm sure! Tell me the story, Soapy~” the little girl giggled, tugging at Sofia's dress front again.
“Alriiiiight~! Well once upon a time, in a far away land . . . “

Hurry up and throw it! If you don't hurry up and throw it, you'll go "boom"!
